Coral Creek Golf Course

This time for a review I thought I’d bust out my 9 iron and hit up one of the newer courses out here, Coral Creek. It was built around 2001 and still looks brand new. It’s located off Geiger Rd in Ewa Beach, about 30 minutes from Waikiki/Downtown Honolulu, so if you’re visiting you’ll need to get a rental car. The prices range from $80 per round to $160 per round, depending what day and time you go. (And no, are you kidding me? I wouldn’t [and didn't, in this case] pay this much for ANY golf course unless I was going to be winning some serious cash from playing that round.) In all, a nice course, I’d rank it about an 8 out of ten.

I arrived at about 8am and the course wasn’t too busy at all. I think during the entire time we were there we saw maybe three other groups. This is very nice, but I’m sure on the weekends it’s much more crowded. My favorite thing probably was their signature 10th hole, with a 30-foot cascading wall and a small lake with a Coral Creek sailboat tied up in the middle of it.

The course also has a 25-stall driving range, putting and chipping practice area, fully stocked pro-shop, and a nice open area where they host demo days from major golf suppliers. I’m not about to describe every hole, but water is a factor in about 13 of them, and there’s also a fun tunnel to drive through, skid, hit the wall, and otherwise break the cart in. So to check out specifics, click here to view all of the holes or see their website.

Another thing I was excited to see there was a North Shore Cattle Company restaurant. Apparently the guy who owns the course also owns Korean Airlines and a Cattle Farm on the North Shore, and serves this fresh, delivered daily beef in the restaurant. The cows are grass fed and proabably delicious, so maybe sometime I’ll have to eat there and review that place too.

These pictures are all from hole 10, and you can see that it really is a nice course. However, all the courses out here are really nice like that, even the crappy ones. I mean, it IS Hawaii, so keeping things green and tropical is a fairly easy thing to do. But this course had amazing, well-manicured fairways and tee boxes, and I’m guessing pretty good greens – they had just recently aerated them, so they were still pretty sandy. You can’t really blame them for that though; if I had 18 $50,000 greens, I’d take care of them too.

As I said, I’d give this course an 8 out of 10. It’s a really, really nice course. However, if you’re here on vacation and if you can only go to one, I’d suggest one that’s more well-known or in a more beautiful area, such as Turtle Bay, because if you’re going to pay a ridiculous amount for golf, it may as well be the best on the island. But if you live here and are looking for a new course, it’s one worth trying out, definitely. And if anyone ever wants to go, for now I can get a fat discount, so let me know and I’ll try to set something up.
