For those of you with GMAIL, they’ve just rolled out a new feature: AIM support through GMAIL. As they explain it, it’s not a merging between Google Talk and AIM; simply a way to access AIM through your Google Talk. I think the best part of this is that for those AIM users who are stuck in a cubicle at work, but can’t download AIM because their employer is spying on them, AIM can now work just like Google Chat — through the web, so it looks just like normal web traffic. Google once again finds a way to rock my socks.
More importantly, it seems like Google is trying to do what I wish other companies would do: join up but not. See, Google adding AIM isn’t a merge, they’re not saying one is better than the other. They’re simply giving consumers more options: an easier way to do things. Until now, the only way to get multiple chat clients together was a third party program. Who cares which chat medium one uses? If everyone can access any of them from all programs, all the companies win, right? I wish more companies would do this with more things – it sure would make things easier for us.
But speaking of communication methods, if anyone is on XBox Live, respond to this or email me, I’ll add you and then kick your ass at whatever games we both have.
