Ignorant people exist wherever you go. You’d find them in Mexico. And that stunt shouldn’t surprise anyone… as long as every legal, of age citizen is given the right to vote, a large quantity of uneducated votes will come with that.
Republicans are even acknowledging that via Sarah Palin’s continuous references to “Joe Six Pack / Joe the Plumber”. Each party can count on it’s uneducated or radical base that will not be persuaded to vote outside of their favored party. That’s why traditionally, blue states are blue and red states are red. Swing states probably have the highest concentration of independent voters that might actually consider policy when voting for a candidate, but as an independent voter myself, I can’t say policy is what has made up my mind.
People vote for people. We vote based on our perception of a candidates character and a conclusion that, regardless of their policy positions, “I like him better than that other guy”. The various aspects that help us come to those conclusions vary from person to person (Christians always vote for the Christian/anti-abortion candidate, wealthy business owners always vote for the “cut taxes/small government” candidate, I-couldn’t-give-a-fuck-about-politics black/white guys vote for the black/white candidate).
Basically, Obama is black, young, speaks well, and already has more respect/support around the world than probably any of our modern day presidents. McCain is white, old, goes with his gut, has military experience/was a POW, and picked the most controversial VP candidate ever.
Pick which one makes you more comfortable. Aside from minor decisions like banning gay marriage, preventing stem cell research, and deciding who’s going to pay taxes, the President probably won’t do much to change current policy. Few ever have. Our government is a cluster-fuck and one man can’t control it all. We should probably be more concerned with the people he might assign to watch over our economic markets or who he could appoint to our courts.
