Wow, so we’re not getting paid for this or anything, but this new ad campaign from GE is really cool. They call it augmented reality: basically, you print out a .pdf file of a black and white image that you then hold up to your webcam. Then, like magic, it comes alive in the window of the webpage! Ah screw it, just check out my pics from it and the video from GE. It doesn’t do much now except for letting you spin the wind turbines by blowing into the mic and moving it around a bit, but imagine the possibilities for this type of advertising.
Kind of reminds me of Back to the Future II when Marty got eaten by a holographic “Jaws 19″ shark. Hey, that movie took place in 2015… I could see that happening in another 6 years. Probably not Jaws 19 by then though.
Here’s the video that GE made to promote it. Keep in mind too you need Flash and a webcam to make this work. And a printer, black ink, a piece of paper, monitor, computer, eyes, and about 30 minutes you’ll waste playing around with it.
