Earth Day Apocolypse Dog Poop

Talkin Sh!t:
- Over 29,000 tons of dog waste is created every day.
- 2 days worth of dog waste from 100 dogs would contribute enough pollution to close a bay
- Dog poop occupies 3.4% of residential landfills.

Aside from it being Earth Day today, after watching all these apocalypse shows on the History Channel and Planet Earth on Blu-Ray over the past few weeks has made me realize that conservation and all that “hippie crap” isn’t a cultural, political, or any other sort of divisive issue. It really is a serious thing, and even though the human race is set to blow itself out of existence with wars and the type of idiocy that we all hate and write about here, I’d like to think that we all could change, and start to value the things that we all take so much for granted.  The truth is, I honestly believe humanity has no shot, and we will manage to be selfish enough that we will all collectively kill each other.

However, I hope I’m wrong and I hope that humans will be around for a very long time. If I am wrong, or if I am right, I think we should at least leave this planet in such a way that life, even if not human, could be continued here until our sun burns out, or an asteroid hits, or however it REALLY should end. I’ve never been a treehugger per se. As most of you know, I’m on the conservative side politically, and have never been big on the whole global warming issue, even though it was a professor at my college that all but discovered the damn thing. I, like the slutty girl in school who never thought pregnancy could happen to her, realized this all too late, and it’s reaching panic time. But, with a little help from her guidance counselor, a supportive family, and a more mature outlook on life, she and her baby have no guarantee, but things already look a lot better for them. Such is the Earth with global warming, pollution, and the general raping and pilliging of it that we’ve managed to do in the last century or so. We never thought it could ever get THAT bad, but it can and it will, and it’s our turn to become the responsible caretaker of our home planet (at least until we find another one we can all move to and destroy, anyway).

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves though, I can’t go out and buy a hybrid and live in a shack made of recycled newspaper just yet; none of us probably could. But I can do simple things, throughout the day or week, that can help even just a little bit, because if we all did just a little bit, a lot could be accomplished. So one of the first things I’m going to do use bio-degradable, flushable dog waste bags.

My dog craps usually like twice a day, unless he eats something he shouldn’t, then it’s a different story. But each plastic dog waste bag can take up to 1,000 years to decompose in a landfill, and even mummify the poop inside. Yuck. Not to mention that the plastic bags kill over 1 million birds per year, as well as almost a million MORE dolphins, sea turtles, and other marine life. So now I’ll flush them. They’ll go through the treatment plant, just like ours, and out into the ocean. The bags are made from polyvinyl alcohol, which gets soggy like toilet paper when it goes into your toilet. In all, it’s just a more eco-friendly way to dispose of the Zeke turds.

That’s it for now, and if you’re interested in these bags, check out http://www.flushdoggy.com/questions.html for more information and to order some for yourself – it comes out to about $5 per month, which is cheaper than the ones I currently buy. Plus they offer FREE shipping in the U.S! For some more interesting facts and stuff at the flushdoggy blog. And if you’re around Honolulu, let me know, I could probably spare a couple for those of you who want to check them out.

Happy Earth Day everyone. Now do the right thing.

And Happy Birthday, Dad.

Steve is currently 25 and enjoys hot pockets, but he absolutely hates it when chicks tell stories of how drunk and sick they got. Gross.
