If there was anybody that needs a slap to the face, it’s one of my coworkers. Because of the confidentiality agreement at my job, I’ll have to omit some details and use some generalities, but I should be able to still get my point across. Not that many people read this, but I am a firm believer in the CYA approach to everything, especially work-related. For those who don’t know, I’m a State worker as a juvenile counselor at a residential program where the residents are generally aged 13-17 and are court-ordered to be there, where they live, sleep, eat, and attend school. Occasionally, a judge will grant a furlough for a resident, after which they return, usually the same day.
Last week, one of our more respectful, well behaved residents was granted a furlough in order to attend his graduation from the C-Base program (which lies somewhere between a GED and an actual diploma, but is closer to a diploma). As a gift, he was given a significant amount of money (again, without too many details we’ll just say he could buy something nice, like an 8GB iPhone or, y’know, whatever). He brought this money back to the facility, because, according to him, he didn’t trust leaving it with his family. Keep in mind that many of our residents come from families and lives that are less than ideal. So to you and me, it’s a significant amount, to him it was probably more than he’s seen in one place in quite some time, much less owned for himself.
The next morning he asked the Supervisor about the money, which he saw a staff member put in an envelope and in the Supervisor’s box the night before, and the Supervisor said he never saw anything about it. His graduation gift had been stolen by (likely) a staff member at the facility in less than 12 hours.
Now, I’m not going to make wild accusations about who I believe it was, but it may have in fact been a staff member. Regardless of who it was, it infuriates me to no end that somebody would do something like this. Here this kid worked his ass off to get his diploma before turning 18 in order to have a better chance at life and turn things around, and in a place where he thought he could trust and where is supposed to provide a safe and secure environment, and gets a significant gift from what may be the biggest accomplishment of his entire life stolen by the very people hired to counsel, help, and protect him. As I type this I still shake my head in disgust.
Again, I’m not here to throw out accusations, but if it was a staff member, and again I’ll cite the confidentiality agreement and the need to avoid words that may turn up in a Google search, that’s despicable. Whether it was or wasn’t who I think it was it is my opinion that one would have to be lower than low – worse than the scum of the earth to do this sort of thing to someone, especially a kid and especially under the circumstances that it happened, who doesn’t have a job (unlike, quite possibly, whoever did this), and is trying to get his life in order so he doesn’t have to resort back to a life of crime. It’s disgusting and I find myself at a rare loss of adjectives that I can use to express how much this sort of thing gets to me, but I’ll try. What a freaking selfish, vile, horrible, wretched, despicable thing for an abhorrent, worthless, dishonest, foul excuse for a plebeian to do. Seriously, get some class, some integrity, and don’t be such a douchefuck. I really hope this person gets what is coming to him/her. If I do find out who did this, I hope I will not have to work with this person, because I won’t even be able to look at him/her in the eyes, as I will have lost all respect I ever had for this person, and to me is now just a worthless walking pile of meat, bones, and shit. I really hope s/he is bitch slapped by Karma, the sooner and harder the better.
